About GySgt Gifford

Born in Fall River, Mass., and a native of Palm Bay, Fla., GySgt Jonathan W. Gifford was a 1996 graduate of Melbourne Central Catholic High School, and briefly attended Saint Leo University before joining the Marine Corps in November 1996. After boot camp, he graduated the School of Infantry and was an infantry rifleman, with his first assignment of 3d Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, N.C. While at 3/6, GySgt Gifford took the Reconnaissance Indoctrination course, was selected and was further assigned to 2d Force Recon Company, where he deployed with the 22d and 24th Marine Expeditionary Units.

GySgt Gifford was honorably discharged from the Corps in July 2001, but came back in 15 months later during the beginning months of Operation Enduring Freedom, coming back to 2d Force Recon. He deployed to Afghanistan with 22d MEU and then another deployment with 2d Force to Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was meritoriously promoted to staff sergeant. He received orders to MARSOC in July 2006, just months after the unit was activated, serving as chief instructor of the MARSOC Advanced Sniper Course.

GySgt_GiffordIn May 2009, he was assigned as a Team Chief with Hotel Company, 2d MSOB, Camp Lejeune. His 2012 deployment to Badghis Province in Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, was his second deployment with 2d MSOB. He played soccer and baseball in high school and was described by his teammates as a very talented, disciplined, and fierce competitor. Gifford received a full soccer scholarship to Saint Leo College but left college to join the Marines. His personal decorations include a Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat V, two Combat Action Ribbons, and four Good Conduct Medals.

While assigned to Team 8232, GySgt Gifford was on a routine cordon and search mission near Bala Bokan when his patrol was fired upon from an enemy machine gun position, killing GySgt Gifford and another team member.
